Welcome to bloom.

My name is Jessica, and I believe what we call the little things – discovering a new book, taking a leisurely walk, embracing the warmth of freshly-dried clothes – are some of the most important things we can appreciate.

No one says to themselves, “I wish I was busier” or “I really want to start spending more time on my phone.” Everyone wants more time to themselves and to do the things they really love, right? But in a world that prizes being connected, productive and fast-paced, it can be hard to slow down and take time out for ourselves. The thing is, taking time to appreciate the simple things isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Any of my fellow introverts would agree. But discovering the joy of simpler living isn’t just for introverts; it’s for everyone. Making a conscious effort on getting back to a less hectic, more balanced lifestyle can make every day a little better.

I’m not so naive as to think this is possible all the time, or to say that accomplishing a lot is bad or wrong. I just believe we can live better, happier lives with clearer purposes when we focus less on buying, consuming and busyness and more on our relationships, surroundings and personal growth.

What will I find here?

Bloom is filled with tips and stories about:

  • Listening to your body: Eating well, getting enough sleep, staying active and taking time to relax are important to me and should be for everyone.
  • Connecting to the people and places around us: Relationships and our environment play vital roles in our lives; let’s take the time to nurture them both.
  • Learning and growing: Whether it’s physically or mentally, doing something new and strengthening skills are important to our overall good health and fresh state of mind.

You may be considering the irony of an online blog with social media that’s preaching the value of getting offline. The thing is, I’m not saying we have to entirely stay off. Despite the negative aspects of being connected, there are plenty of good ones, too: Finding a community, learning new things and exploring new ways to spend time wisely. So when you’re done reading this, do me a favor: Put down the phone, tablet or computer and do something entirely electronic-free. You never know what you’ll discover.
