Happy spring! 5 ways to embrace the season

After a cold, dark Midwestern winter, seeing the sun outside and flowers blooming does my heart some good. While we all love spring, all too often it seems to get shuffled aside as just winter finally ending and summer about to begin. But this season has so much to offer, it’s worth it to take some time to appreciate it. Here are my five tips for making the most of springtime.

Get outside.

It’s pretty obvious, and I probably don’t have to encourage you too much to get outside after months of cold and grey. Nevertheless, with warmer temperatures and a later sunset, spring is the perfect time to resume evening walks or runs and outside activities. Spend some time at the park or take a trip to your local metropark and soak in the sunshine.

Eat seasonally.

From asparagus to radishes to morel mushrooms, the bright flavors of spring are some of my favorite things to eat. Spring is also a time when many farmer’s markets start up again, so dive into something fresh and delicious this month!

Bring the outdoors in.

Open windows, buy (or pick) fresh flowers, and maybe finally repaint the living room in a bright, sunny color.

Check on your priorities.

If you made New Year’s resolutions, now is a great time to see how you’re doing on them. If not, and if there’s something you want to change – starting a new project or good habit – why not take a cue from Mother Nature and begin now?

Shed the heavy layers.

Finally, we can go from the house to the car without wearing a thick padding of leggings, boots, coats, hats, gloves, et. al. Embrace brighter colors and lighter fabrics and let spring come to your wardrobe, too. While spring weather can be unpredictable, at least you know warmer weather is on its way.
